Tristhal Yatra: Day2 @ Prayag – Part 1

Prayage mundam – kashi dandam – gaya pindam, so goes an ancient saying…

In Prayag get your hair shorn, in Kashi accept the Lord’s caning, and in Gaya offer rice-balls to your forefathers…

April 26. 09… Second day of the pilgrimage… Early morning sees us leave for Prayag… which is the original name of the place later called Allahabad. The holy place of Triveni sangam, the meeting of the three rivers – the Ganga, Yamuna and the now-unseen river Saraswati… A place so holy that it is called the King of Holy places, Theertha-Raj, Prayag-Raj…

We took off at about 7 am or so. In a station-wagon…

After an hours drive, stopped at a dhaba somewhere on the highway… Shops : Alka Clinic, Diamond Tailors, Karim Auto Repairing centre, a little ramshackle shop that said “Western Union” money transfer, Nikhar Men’s Parlour and Mahak Beauty Parlour…. Business is buzzing…

Ah, yes, all manners of transport.. Tempo taxi, that timeless thing of beauty… The bus, with goods overflowing from the top, riding on faith, sporting a sign “Jai Durgey”… ini-truck, bicycle, motorcycles,  and camels…

Yes….camels, taking a load to the vegetables market…

Another hour or so later, we reached Allahabad, and our guide took us straight to the house of the priest who would be conducting the ceremonies… A south Indian gentleman, whose family had settled here many generations ago…  They were the local Dharma-kartas for Kanchi as well as Sringeri Mutt (Srini, pls note… Sangam here)

A nice, traditional Indian home… With a courtyard in the interior, open to the sky…

It was an open establishment… All are welcome…  Like this elderly lady who just walked in, and asked for something to eat… She was a regular visitor, they told me….
