Making of Hanuman – 3B

June 7, 2011

Jai Siya Ram!

Continuing our walk in Sree Balaji Shilpa Kalai-koodam…

A hello first, from a smiling Hanuman face, lounging in the open….

All right… the main Hanuman is now all set to leave this place… A group of people are hauling a huge rope… The crane is ready.

The idol is  32 feet tall and weighs around 60 tons. I understand that the name of the deity is “Vishwaroopa Sankatahara Mangala Maruti”… The idol is to be loaded onto a massive truck, for being carried to Alangudi…

Here’s the truck….

Reminds one of the the platform on many wheels designed by Lilliputians to carry Gulliver…

Ok…. Lets move on to the other idols…

There is a set of idols – Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Anjaneya…

And there is one of Lakshmi-Narsimha…

This is a special form of Narsimha… Modeled on Chatravata (छत्रवट) Nrsimha of Ahobilam… Chatravata Narsimha of Ahobilam is so named because he was originally in the shade of a banyan tree… The story is that when Narsimha had just slain Hiranyakashipu, he was in great anger… In order to appease him, Ha-Ha and Hoo-Hoo, two gandharvas, sang melodious tunes… And Narsimha was so pleased, he started keeping time (Taalam) on his thigh with his left hand… And he was all smiles… The Narsihma idol here is so sculpted that the face is the smiling visage of Chatravata Narsimha….

All these idols have been sculpted under the leadership of Sthapathi Ramakrishnan. A very simple, unassuming man… A gem of an artiste… Here he is, standing near the idols he unraveled from stone…

The consecration of “Vishwaroopa Sankatahara Mangala Maruti” is scheduled for 12-June….

Jai Bajrang Bali!
