Aksharamanamalai – Tamil and English

January 7, 2018

Aksharamanamalai is a divine outpouring of Bhakti and Jnana, ‘seen’ and composed by Ramana Maharshi, little more than a hundred years ago… A powerful hymn, the composition has been a ‘taraka mantra’ for devotees, and is sung every day by ever so many people… The composition has been translated and sung in some other Indian languages as well.

This blog writer had the privilege and blessing of translating the holy song into Hindi, some years ago. And the later, in 2014, the centenary year of Akshramanalai, he had the great honor of translating the song into English. He presented this during a seminar of Ramana Centre, Bengaluru in early April 2014. He presented this once more during the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Ramana Kendra, New Delhi, which was held in end April, 2014. And then later he presented this in Ramana Kendra, Chennai as well.

And then as a fulfillment of a heartfelt prayer, he could present this in Sri Ramanasramam as well. On December 16th, 2017, this was sung in the New Hall adjoining the Mathrubhutheshwara and Ramaneshwara Mahalinga shrine at Sri Ramanasramam. The original Tamil verses and the translated English verses, were sung alternatively, individually. My better half Ambika, sang the Tamil verses, and yours truly sang the English..

Sharing a youtube of the audio recorded that day.

Om Namo Bhagavate Sri Ramanaya! Arunachala smaranam!

Thai Poosham

February 4, 2015

Feb 3 2015… Thai Poosham… A festival of Lord Murugan, celebrated with much joy by Tamil people all over… India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, South Africa… the world over..

Morning started, as most mornings do, with whatsapp greetings… This day it was pictures of Lord Muruga… And a verse from Tiruppugazh… The timeless treatise of the great sage of Arunachala – Tiru Arunagirinathar…. This verse is a well known one, where Arunagirinathar prays to Lord Muruga to come in the form a Guru and bless him…

உருவாய் அருவாய் உளதாய் இலதாய்
மருவாய் மலராய் மணியாய் ஒளியாய்
கருவாய் உயிராய் கதியாய் குருவாய்
வருவாய் அருவாய் குகனே

uruvAi aruvAi uLathAi ilathAi
maruvAi malarAi maNiyAi oLiyAi
karuvAi uyirAi gadhiyAi vidhiyAi
guruvAi varuvAi aruLvAi guhanE

As formless, as with form,
As That which is, As That which is not,
As Fragrance, as Flowers,
As Chime of bells, as Light,
As Embryo, as Life,
As Divine Destiny, as Fruits of Karma
As Guru,
Please come and bless me,
O one in the cave (of the heart)!

Lovely verse, with beautiful sounds…. These then formed as a picture in one’s mind… A picture of Lord Muruga of Pazhani, clad in a loin cloth… And his manifestation as a Guru, in the form of the sage of Arunachala, Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi…

*

Evening saw one having darshan of Bhagavan at Ramana Kendra in Chennai, and listening to a soulful music concert of Ramana songs…

Night of Thai Poosham…

One went to the eastern balcony to gaze at the sky and the beautiful full-moon of Thai poosham… A lovely sight greeted the eyes, with a small cluster of black and white clouds flying across the face of the sky, right in front of the moon, making the moon appear to be floating in the other direction… What also caught one’s eye was a bright star at around 8 AM position with respect to the moon… It left an impression…

This morning one saw a picture on the Net… From Jamaica.. of the full moon and ‘that star’

*

moon-thai-pusham-jamaica

*

It was a retweet by ‘Epic Cosmos’ which read – the Moon and Jupiter from Jamaica, this evening.

Aha, the star was a planet! Jupiter!

This is a special cosmic sight. Apparently, Jupiter enjoys its month of glory in February 2015, being the time of what is called the ‘Jupiter Opposition’. What is opposition? It simply means that Earth passes between Jupiter and the sun. Jupiter is opposite the sun in our sky – at its best! (To read about this click here )

And then a friend shared this other picture, from Arunachala.

*

Thai-pusham-moon*

Perfect setting for the verse of Arunagirinathar… The mountain Arunagiri… Thai Poosham, the festival of Muruga… Full moon.,.. And Jupiter, which in Indian astronomy is known as Guru…

The prayer of Arunagiri was – ‘As Guru, please come and bless me…”…

Guru has come in the Arunachala sky!

Haro Hara!

Arunachala in December – A picture post

December 28, 2014

Namaste.

The year 2014 comes to an end, and we go for a short visit to Arunachala…. To Sri Ramanasramam (Asram).

26 December… Start off on Giripradakshinam, the holy walk around Arunachala

.

20141226_164707.

Half an hour or so into the walk, we come across a shrine that’s closed… Draupadi amman temple… A Soota moment…

.

20141226_161357.

An hour and a half into the ‘valam’, we come to the Adi Annamalai temple, the old temple of Arunachaleshwara, 180 degress on the other side of the mountain from the main Arunachaleshwara temple…

.

20141226_173559.

A large group of Europeans are having a ceremony of sorts inside the temple, opposite the Goddess Apitakuchamba shrine. A European lady is sitting right next to the sanctum and is absorbed in meditation… This is the ‘Idea of India’ that Soota understands… Soota and friend walk around the outer ‘praakaaram’ chanting Rudram, seeing the mountain and the temple… This is heaven…

Setting off again…. A nice view of Arunachala…

.

We return to the room at around 9 pm… Nidra time…

27 December…

We are up at 4 am… For the plan is to visit the big temple of Arunachaleshwara. This being the month of Margazhi, the temple opens at 3 am. We are in the temple at 5 am.

Entering the inner courtyard, we are greeted by the sight of hundreds of pilgrims lining up in a queue…. We are late… No hope of having darshan for another hour, at the very least…

We amble around the temple, taking in the sights…

Here is a picture of devotees, in the morning darkness, lighting ghee lamps near the shrine of Navagraha… Today is Saturday, and folks light lamps for Shaneeshvara…

.

We return to the Asram.. See the morning Puja… Have breakfast… Stroll around…

Some sights..

A peacock strikes a philosopher’s pose on top of a thatch roof of one of the dwellings in the Asram. Today is Shashti… the day of the month sacred for worship of Lord Subrahmanya… Who is identified with Ramana as well…

After some silent time at the Asram halls, we come back to the Arunachaleshvara temple at around 10 am. This time, we somehow manage to have Darshan… Wonderful… Especially the darshan of Goddess Apitakuchamba, the consort of Lord Arunachaleshwara… Darshan of Her feet, from up close…

A few pictures from this visit to the temple.. Click and browse.

Around 12 Noon we return to Asram for Lunch. Delicious prasadam… Blessings of Bhagavan..

eBooks Two – A novella and some poetry

September 5, 2014

Freedom is a high.

Publishing the e-book way is like the ‘Berlin wall and Sentries’ of brick and mortar world of publication and distribution just going up in smoke – the veil of Maya suddenly lifting, and matter ceasing to matter…

Well, not exactly that, but to Soota (‘yours truly’), the feeling is good, anyway.

Two of this-I’s books are now available as ebooks on Amazon… Ready to buy 🙂 and read….

The first is a short work of fiction, called “The Night the Moon Disappeared”.

.

Moon ebook cover 1400 by 1750v2

The story is about a family that sets out on a full moon night, doing circumambulation around the holy mountain of Arunachala… And what happens when the moon disappears, death-style… A book meant for people of all ages, it starts off as a children’s story and grows up at every step of the way to reach the summit of the holy mountain, Arunachala… It is a search in prose-poetry of mystic ways to find one’s own Self.

Click here for the Amazon-Kindle link to the e-book.

The second one is a book of poems – titled “Seahorse in the Sky”. This was earlier published in print version by Writers Workshop. Now, it takes an e-avatar…

.

Seahorse cover 1400 by 1800

Divya Kumar, blogger-writer, blogging about different book launches in Chennai, mentioned that the book was “Not a work of fiction, but an excellent collection of poetry by an unlikely poet“.

She linked to her article in The Hindu, Metro Plus section (“The Art of Juggling” Click here to read ), where she wrote:

Seahorse in the Sky is truly good poetry in the old-fashioned sense, filled with deftly-drawn word sketches, gently ironic observances of human nature, and sometimes poignant, sometimes funny stories, crafted out of the fabric of our daily lives

For new ebook explorers… You can download and read these books on a Kindle book reader. But you don’t necessarily need a Kindle device. You can download the Kindle App on your Laptop, Desktop, Tablet or Smartphone – and you are ready-to-read…. The App is free and the link is available on the Amazon book-links above…

Maanasa Kailasa Yatra – 43 – Mangalam

July 21, 2014

Did I mention that the water-cans bought at Darchen did not last? Many co-yatris who had filled their darchen-cans with Manasarovar water found that their cans had cracked, and the waters gone… More titiskha… Fellow Yatri-s pitched in and gave some from their cans, and all’s well that ends well.

On the 9th of July, 2013, Soota left Kathmandu for New Delhi. After a days there, he returned home, to Chennai… A tremendous sense of peace enveloped him. Walking past the shrine of Buddha in the Theosophical society, Chennai, he felt beautifully insignificant. A month later, on Ekadashi tithi, he and Shankar came to Tiruvannamalai and did Giriprakshanam (circumambulation of Arunachala) as thanksgiving. It was on another Ekadashi day, two fortnights ago, that they had done the second day of Kora, and crossed the Dolma La.

Soota also made a trip to Kanchipuram, to Kailasanatha temple, and offered some Maanas water for abhisheka to Lord Kailasanatha. Also to Devi Kamakshi at Kanchipuram and Mundagakkanni Amman at Chennai… And then this year, on Sivaratri night, Soota, Shankar, Shiva – three co-yatris of Kailasa – along with Narayana Iyer, another friend who had done Kailasa Yatra a few years earlier – did Arunachala Kora together…. Om Nama Sivaya!

In Chennai, immediately after his return from Kailasa Yatra, Soota shared his Yatra experience in ‘story-telling’ sessions with a small group of enthusiasts. He commenced writing this blog series as well, little realizing what he was getting into. A series that has taken a whole year to complete. Many of you have been with this whole Yatra – and heartfelt thanks to you all. Many have decided to make the Yatra themselves… More power to them… We have now entered the Tibetan year of the horse – a kumbh-mela year of pilgrimage of Kailasa… Comes once in twelve years… Om Nama Sivaya!

Yes, it has been a fascinating experience – being in the ‘zone’ for a whole year. Many nuggets of information came one’s way. Here’s one tidbit – In 1943 and 44, Sree Kailasa Sarana, a lingayat from Karnataka, did 100 rounds of Kailasa and 12 of Maanasa… (Info courtesy Swami Pranavananda). Another nugget: Did you know that the Prime Minister of India, Sri Narendra Modi, has done Kailash Manasarovar Yatra by foot?

Here’s a picture from the Net.. A young Modi, at Kailasa ( Click here for source  )

`

modi-kailasa`

And one reads now, that just a few days ago, Indian Premier Narendra Modi met with the Chinese President Xi Jinping and discussed opening of an alternative route for Kailash Yatra. A news report in the Hindu (Click here ) states – “The two leaders met at Fortaleza in Brazil, ahead of the BRICS summit where Mr. Modi raised the possibility of additional route for the Mansarovar Yatra since the present one from Uttarakhand is complicated… The Chinese President gave an assurance to consider the request for an alternative route. .. The alternate way to Mansarovar goes from Kinnaur in Himachal and is much easier, shorter and safer. From the last Indian village of Shipkila in Kinnaur the holy lake of Mansarovar is just 91 km away and can be covered by road with a little trekking. “

How wonderful…

As Soota draws curtains on this blog series on Maanas-Kailasa Yatra, a verse from ‘Avadhuta Gita’ comes to his mind…

त्वद्यात्रया व्यापकता हता ते
ध्यानेन चेतःपरता हता ते ।
स्तुत्या मया वाक्परता हता ते
क्षमस्व नित्यं त्रिविधापराधान् ।।

Lord! By making a pilgrimage (to holy places), your all-pervasiveness has been negated, destroyed . By meditating on you, your transcendence of mind has been negated, destroyed. By my praising you, your being beyond the reach of words has been negated, destroyed. Lord, ever forgive me for these triple sins.

This was the proclamation of Avadhuta, Dattatreya. He in the Bliss of complete non-duality, steps down from it to offer this prayer… Yes, this proclamation of the Avadhuta (the all renouncing mendicant sanyasi) is a prayer too! To the same all-pervading, supreme, transcendence that is Siva.

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa has said – “I don’t want to become sugar; I want to eat it. I never feel like saving, ‘I am Brahman.’ I say, ‘Thou art my Lord and I am Thy servant.’..”

Let us then sing Mangalam to Siva… Auspiciousness to auspiciousness.

First the words of Goswami Tulasidas, who says in Ramacharitamanas….

परम रम्य गिरिवर कैलासू, सदा जहाँ शिव उमा निवासू।।
रचि महेस निज मानस राखा। पाइ सुसमउ सिवा सन भाषा।।

Supremely enchanting is the best of Mountains, Kailasa! Eternally, where, reside Siva and Uma!
Siva composed (Ramacharita-maanasa) and kept in his Maanasa;
And when the auspicious time came, he conveyed it to his consort, Sivaa (Parvati)!

Yes, the Manasarovar is the pure consciousness that is the carita of Rama…

Next, in the words of that great father of saints, Appar, Tirunavukkarasar – the King of Holy Words… A verse from his Tiru-Kailaya-tirutthaandakam

Praise the Lord, ruler of the world!
Praise Him who gives all happiness!
Praise Him who has not the least trace of deceit ;
Praise Him who gulped the sea venom!
Praise Him who has great virtues !
Praise Him who abides happily in my consciousness!
Praise Him whose vision cannot be had without great difficulty!
Praise that One who abides in Kailasa mountain! Praise! Praise!

 *

And another from Siva who walked on earth as Jagadguru Shankara Bhagavatpada …. Adi Shankara, sings in his great work, Sivanandalahari –

When, indeed, will I be in Kailasa
In the gold-and-jewels mansion of yours,
In the company of your gaNA-s (attendant denizens)
When, indeed will I be in front of you,
O Shambhu, doer of all good,
With my hands raised, folded in prayer!
Oh all pervading Lord, One with Goddess Mother, Master,
Supreme Siva,
(When indeed will I be thus) praying aloud – “Save me! Save me!”
(Indeed, when will it be)
When I expend eternities of creator’s time, in happiness,
As if it were but a brief moment!

 *

So fellow Yatris in this blog journey of Maanas-Kailasa, praise be to the force that is Siva…. Lama Govinda, avers in his book “The Way of the White Clouds” –

There are many religious Orders in this world, Orders with rules and regulations, with dogmas and rituals, with vows and initiations. But the brotherhood of those who have performed the pilgrimage to Kailas, who have gone through the trials of dangers and hardships, and were rewarded with the glorious vision of the sacred land, has received an initiation of the most profound nature. The invisible bond which unites them needs no vows, no dogmas, and no rituals. It consists in their common experience, the lasting effect of which is stronger than any manmade rules and distinctions”.

Ramana Maharshi, the sage of Arunachala, has said – “To go to Kailasa and return is just a new birth. For there the body idea drops off.”

Ramanasramam – A video clip

June 1, 2014

Sharing a video clip that I took on my cell phone a few days ago – on the centenary puja of Swami Ramanananda, the previous President of Sri Ramanasramam. He was Sri Ramana’s nephew and dedicated his life to the cause of Ramanasramam and devotees. His name in his poorvashrama was TN Venkatraman. A picture of confidence and joy, he had great affection for me, as I for him. He passed away a few years ago and was interred in a samadhi by the side of his father’s (Swami Niranjananda) in Ramanasramam. This blog featured a four part series on his samadhi interment ( Click here for links )

The video clip here shows students of the Asrama Veda Pathashala chanting by the side of the samadhi of Swami Ramanananda. And then pans to show some peacocks… dance…

Listen to the chant of Veda…  Preserved in its purity in South India… Proper intonations, handed down thousands of years…

Experience the peace of the Ashrama.. Listen to the peacocks… See them dance… Enjoy the harmony of nature…

Arunachala – a moment of magic

May 25, 2014

This was yesterday, 24th May 2014. Two days after Mahapuja at Ramanasramam.

I was doing Girivalam (Giripradakshinam, Parikrama, Kora… the walk around Arunachala mountain)…

It has been raining last few evenings. Pretty sharp squalls. Trees had been flattened here and there. More of the same was expected on 24th as well.. But here we were…Proceeding on the walk around the Arunachala hill.

We were a group of nine people. It was Ekadashi thithi (eleventh day of lunar fortnight.. Sacred day) . One of the members of our group was Vandana, a young lady who I had met during my Maanasa-Kailasa Yatra. She had come with a family group, and all of them had completed the whole kora.

This was her first visit to Arunachala.

I recalled to her that the second day of Kailasa kora, the most grueling day of the Kailasa girivalam, had also been on Ekadashi… And so this Arunachala kora felt special too.

Akin to walk up Dolma La pass in Kailasa, was our walk up to Skandasramam and Virupaksha cave earlier in the day. And then, come evening, we started on Girivalam around 5-45 pm. The day had been very hot. It was the period of Agni Nakrshatram – the Tamil word that signified a period of burning-hot days… As we have to walk barefoot during the parikrama, we had to start when the Sun was going down, so that the tar-road would be bearable to the bare soles…

As we walked, at one stage we could sense the fragrance of far-off-rains. Sporadic lightnings gave hints of another squall to come.. As the sky darkened, I halted at a spot on the road, from where one could get a nice view of Arunachala. With my cell phone (a Samsung grand) I took a photograph of Arunachala against the night sky. And after clicking, I just opened the gallery to see how the picture had come..

And what I saw blew me away… One saw a steak of light from the sky, like a comet, going right into the heart of Arunachala… The spiritual heart, which as Ramana Maharshi has explained, is to the right…

All I can say is that I saw no streak of light in the sky. I saw it only in the picture. Perhaps there is some physical explanation for this… It may be a reflection of some light on the camera lens, maybe.. Who knows.. But it is magical…

As soon as I saw it, I shared it on whatsapp with a few close people…

And now, sharing it in this blog …I have cropped and cut off the lower quarter of the original picture.. Else the photo remains completely untouched…

Arunachala!

Aksharamanamalai – in English verse

May 10, 2014

Namo Ramana!

Among Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi’s compositions, Aksharamanamalai occupies a unique place. A Tamil work of sublime spirituality, the verses have the power of Veda Mantra. They are revealed words that Bhagavan Ramana, as a Maharshi, saw, and shared with the world of devotees of the One!

This year, 2014, happens to mark a hundred years since this work was revealed to the world. Sri Ramana composed this in 1914 AD, during the course of one circumambulation of Arunachala!

To mark this centenary, Ramana centres all over India, and perhaps the world, are having various festive events. Ramana Maharshi Centre of Learning, Bengaluru held an event in Feb 2014 where over 500 people sang Aksharamanamalai. The song itself has been translated by other devotees into several Indian languages, and they were all sung in part during this event, which also marked 500th performance of Ramananjali, a music troupe that focuses on Ramana Maharshi compositions…

This blog writer had the privilege and blessing of translating the holy song into Hindi, some years ago. And now, in this centenary year, he had the great honor of translating the song into English. He presented this during a seminar of Ramana Centre, Bengaluru in early April 2014. He presented this once more during the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Ramana Kendra, New Delhi, which was held in end April, 2014.

he Ramana Kendra, New Delhi has recorded and shared videos of all the talks held during the event. One of them was this blog writer’s presentation as well… Sharing the youtube of that presentation… Aksharamanamalai, in English… Set to the same metre as the original Tamil song… In rhyme… So that it can be sung in English, just as the original Tamil treatise…

Needless to say, any merit in the translation is solely due to the power of the original, to the grace of Sri Ramana… And all shortcomings are entirely mine…

With your indulgence, presenting Aksharamanamalai in English, in song format… The RamanaKendra, New Delhi video… Starts with a few minutes of intro and talk… And then the song begins…

`

`

Happy that today happens to be the day the wedding of Madurai Meenakshi Amman and Lord Sundareshwara is celebrated. The divine parents of Ramana Maharshi!

Om Namo Bhagavate Sri Ramanaya!

Maanasa Kailasa Yatra – 31

April 14, 2014

In the last post, we had a glimpse of the great General Zoravar Singh… Zoravar Singh captured over 700 kms of Tibet in three months, in 1841… But the triumph was not for long. In deep winter, December of that year, Tibetan forces surprised him by coming across a route that  he had not anticipated… He was killed in a fierce battle on December 12th, 1941. So heroic was this victory for the Tibetan forces, that they took his head as trophy and displayed it in Lhasa. (Click here to read an interesting blog post about Zorawar Singh )

Here are a couple of pictures. (Click and use arrow key to browse.)  The first one is of Indian army soldiers saluting a statue of the General. The second one is his place of burial, in Toyo, near Takklakot, in Tibet.  Recognizing his great valor, the Tibetans built this chorten – samadhi… ( Click here for source of these photos )

`

`

So deep was the impression that Zorawar Singh made on the people of Tibet, that his relics are stored with pride in various places…. We come to know from Swami Pranavananda’s book “Kailas-Manasarovar”, that some armors, helmets  and swords of Zorawar Singh are stored in Chuku Gompa, the monastery of Nyenri mountain, on the Lha Chu valley, west of Mt Kailasa.

Shall we come back to the yatra of the valley.

On walking half an hour or so from Yamadvar, you come to the vicinity of Chuku Gompa… In the picture below (click here for source), on the mountain on the left, the spot marked in red is approximately where this Gompa is located…The Chuku Gompa is perched like a ‘swallows nest’ on the high fort-like mountain of Nyenri, in the Lha Chu valley….

Click on the picture to get a nice view of the valley..

West valley chuku`

To get to the Gompa, you cross the Lha Chu river, and climb. After a strenuous climb of half an hour or so, you would reach this monastery. From Swami Pranavananda’s account and other Net sources, we come to know that the chief image here is of Chuku Rimpochhe (Amitabha), made of white marble, brought from India hundreds of years ago. On either side of the image are two huge elephant tusks, associated with Padmasambhava. There is an image of Bhutanese Lama Nangyal who was here some three hundred fifty years ago. His face, beard, and head-dress is such that the image looks rather like Guru Nanak (indeed there are accounts that Guru Nanak too came to Maanas-Kailasa and that his image is in a Gompa in this region).

Here are some great pictures of the Gompa, sourced in the Net ( Click here for the source of these photographs )

`

`

In the chengkhang (puja hall) on the top of the monastery, there are images of Mahakali, Mahakala, and Khangri-Lhabchen (or Kangri Lhatsen), the guardian deity of Kailasa… Equivalent of Bhairava… He is fierce looking, as you would expect. Here’s a picture from the Net ( Click here for source )

`

From the top of the monastery, one gets a fine view of Kailasa peak.

Here’s a picture ( Click here for source of this and many other beautiful photographs of Kailasa kora )

`

kailash-from-chuku`

With a silent prayer to the guardian deity of Kailasa, let us continue our blog-yatra of Mt Kailasa….

Yatra Date is 2/July/2013…

Soota is walking all by himself down the Lha Chu valley… He has no knowledge of Chuku Gompa, and walks right past…. Even if he had known about the Gompa, he would hardly have braved the climb.  The low-oxygen and his general physical fitness are both against such diversions. But serious pilgrims do visit this gompa. As did Swami Tapovan Maharaj during his parikrama in 1929 AD.  If you have time and stamina, and have good guides who can speak the local language, then it would surely be worth taking this diversion and visit the Gompa…

Some two hours after walking, he hears bells and turns around to see his horseman Kedhor. He has finally caught up.

Soota gets on to the horse…. Now let no one think that riding a horse is a walk in the park… Soota found it quite uncomfortable… Being unaccustomed to it, the cramped seat, the high stirrup and the general jerk of horse-walk, all makes for muscle strains in many parts of the anatomy… But at least, you can take a break from the walk… And God bless the horse for that…

They go past another food-stop where a few tents have been put up. selling eatables. But the stop holds no promise for Soota, for he is a vegetarian, and you can get little or no vegetarian fare in any Tibetan eatery… The tour organizers have given a small lunch pack, consisting (if memory serves right) of some biscuits and some fruit, and a small juice-pack…Somehow, somewhere along the way, Soota manages to chew some of the stuff from his lunch-pack….

Soota and his horseman carry on past the tent…. Weather is steadily getting worse… It is very cold… And suddenly the skies open up and it starts raining real hard… Soota’s backpack, which is being carried by the horseman, is now a disaster. He has kept a few things packed in plastic bags inside… But the bag itself, while it should be water-proof, is no match for this rain… It has also got torn near the top, being roughed up by the carriage on the kora…

But that is the lesser worry… The real worry is the rain… Soota is protected by his poncho, the Nepali raincoat… But rain finds its way to his skin… And the whole situation is quite miserable! After being battered for a while, Soota decides to call for divine help… He starts chanting “Arunachala Siva, Arunachala Siva” from Aksharamanamalai, the composition of Ramana Maharshi… And his prayer is answered… The rain withdraws.. The Sun comes out… The weather changes so much in minutes (as is characteristic in Maanasa-Kailasa region) it is incredible… What can one say… For Soota, this is a realization of the Oneness of Kailasa and Arunachala… The Presence of Siva…

While, on that day, one could not get a decent sighting of Kailasa due to the overcast conditions, on a good day, one should be able to get a nice view every now and then – between the gaps or above the surrounding mountains…

Here is a picture from the Net, of the view of Kailasa from the West…  ( Click here for source )

Things are not going too well with his co-yatri-s either.. On the way, Soota spots Usha walking all by herself… Her horseman is nowhere to be seen…. Meanwhile, Siva has been having a hard time… Shankar catches up with him, and coaxes him forward… They halt at the food-tent and Shankar orders for some hot noodles…. Siva and Shankar manage to eat that… And that revives Siva quite a bit… And even as they sit in the shelter of the food-tent, the sky opens up.. By the grace of Lord Siva, they are in the protection of the tent… And by the time they finish lunch, the rains stop…. Om Nama Sivaya!

But all the troubles that we face are trivial (nothing at all) compared to the strain undertaken by the average Tibetan pilgrim.. When you see them doing prostration-parikrama, every step of the way, words fail… And they also do not carry any food… They live on what they get as bhiksha… Saktu floor and such fare… And in every breath they chant the sacred mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum”! Prostrations to these pilgrims!

Lord Siva sure is Vishwanatha, the Lord of the Universe.. So it is that he touches pilgrims who come here from every part of the world… Soota-s coyatri Shankar is an American citizen. Siva is an Australian… Lord Shiva Himself, being a resident of Kailasa, is domiciled in  China, in the autonomous region of Tibet! Vasudhaiva kutumbakam – “The world is one family” – says the ancient text of Veda. The proclamation comes in the Mahopanishad, which says –

”अयं बन्धुरयं नेति गणना लघुचेतसाम् | उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् || ”
ayaṁ bandhurayaṁ nēti gaṇanā laghucētasām | udāracaritānām tu vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam ||

(Differentiating among people) Saying ‘this one is my kin; that one is not’,  is for the narrow minded. For those of broad-heart, the entire world is but one  family.’

What a grand tradition is that of India, which could voice such a proclamation thousands of years ago!

Shankar’s son Dasharath is living this truth during the kora. He is all of fifteen years of age, and stands six feet tall. He is American. He has recently returned from a practice trek to Roopkund and Pindari glacier in the Indian Himalaya.  Low oxygen makes no difference to him. He is as energetic as a sherpa. Running back and forth, he has made friends with many other co-yatri-s. He is almost family now with a group of people from the middle-east. He loves company when he is trekking and he makes most of the ‘world is one family’ aphorism. He could probably jog his way around the kora if only someone agreed to run along with him. He is not weighed down by any religious concerns. He believes he is here because his parents wanted (forced?) him to.  It is a different matter that when he was much younger, and in America, a senior Tibetan Lama who they visited, saw in the boy the aura of an advanced soul. He told Shankar that his son was an ‘ancient soul’, who needed but a little ‘training’ to progress in the higher realm of the spiritual path … And so it must be… For here he is, a teenager doing kora of Kailasa…. Who can come here without the call of Siva-Parvati, the non-two, who take one forward, life after life, lavishing care, as only parents can…

Signing off this Kailasa post with the timeless lines of Kalidasa,

‘जगतः पितरौ वन्दे पार्वती परमेश्वरौ’।

I bow to the parents of the universe, Parvati and Parameshwara (Siva)!

Today (blog date) is 14-Apr-2014. The day of the Tamil New Year… Also, the date on which Ramana Maharshi attained Mahanirvana… When the great comet was seen, at the exact time he shed his body…A comet seen all over India by his devotees… Which went and merged in the summit of Arunachala!

Greetings to all!

Om Nama Sivaya!

This post is a continuation of the earlier Sivarati Live post (click here to read)

Some pictures from Sivaratri and the day after…

The Morvi Guest House at Sri Ramanasramam has been renovated…. Nice new rooms…

As I walk around Ramanasramam after the first puja of the night, I am greeted by a new sight….

Young Brahmachari-s of the Ashram Veda Patashala are standing next to a large mound of sand, and chanting the Veda…

vibhooti1

I do not know what the ritual is…. I ask some people who have gathered there….

And then I come to know that the Ashram Vibhooti is being prepared. Every Sivaratri, they prepare Vibhooti (sacred ash) for the whole year…. Cow dung from the Ashram Goshala is used… The mound of sand contains the ingredients that need to be burned the whole night of Sivaratri….

The fire is kindled…

Night sees us join the pilgrims on Girivalam (walking around Arunachala)

Sometime around 11 pm or so, we reach Adi Annamalai temple…

Have darshan of Arunachaleshwara in the sanctum… And then we walk around the prakara, and go to the Northern wall, close to the Southern Face of Arunachala mountain… Being Sivaratri night, it is moonless… It is dark in the outer prakaram… The outer corridor is lined with many a Siva Linga…. We chose a spot somewhere near the centre and sit down, facing a Sahasra-Linga – A siva linga that has a thousand Linga-s carved on it… There is another elderly pilgrim, wearing ochre robes of a sanyasi, who is also sitting nearby… He is in meditation…. Just he and the two of us… And the Holy Presence of Siva….We chant Sri Rudram…. It feels absolutely divine… As we get up, I peer at the Siva Linga right near us… And my companion, Raja, exclaims that it is a Siva Linga with a mukha (face)… I take a picture…

One has been blessed to chant Rudram here on the night of Siva…

We have a wonderful time during Girivalam… As we re-enter the town somewhere around 1 am, my friend Raja has urgent summons… And he takes a Rickshaw back to the room… So, I am by myself…. The main Arunachaleshwara temple in the city is buzzing with pilgrims… I walk around the temple, and reach the road to Ramanasramam…

Enter Seshadri Swamigal Ashrama and have darshan of Siva in Samadhi there…

Then reach Ramanasramam around 2 am… The third kaala puja is completing just as I enter…. Final anuvaka of chamakam is chanted… And then the Rudram is chanted… Must be ekadasha rudram… Aarti is offered… Blessed Darshan…. Fulfillment of Sivaratri..

Around 2:30 am, reach the room and retire…

Morning, one does Tarpana….

Then walk to the Ashrama….

The mound of sand is now smoldering… Vibhooti for the year is nearly done…

Go shala… Vibhooti preparation…. A bullock cart…

Lovely to see India life, in pristine form…

Signing off this post with a picture of that mornings Veda Parayana at Bhagavan Ramana’s sannidhi….
